Iceland Grand Tour and Westfjords region

During this selfdrive tour you will discover all of Iceland’s magnificent regions. You have ample time to explore and discover every thing Iceland has to offer, the pace is slow. This tour dedicates two whole days to the wonders of Southwest Iceland, including Borgarfjordur Fjord and the mystic Snaefellsnes Glacier. This beautiful area was made famous by the author Jules Verne. Lonely Planet voted this region as the best to visit in Iceland.

This journey takes you along many of the volcanoes, waterfalls, glaciers, and seascapes that make Iceland’s landscapes so magical and unforgettable. We recommend a rental car with high clearance, like a Toyota Auris or up.
Please note that today, the ring road over the island includes a toll tunnel on day 10 (www.tunnel.is), this new tunnel is 8 km. This is one of the few tours that take you to the Westfjords region where you can explore the magical Snaefellsnes Peninsula and the less known but incredibly beautiful Northeast Coast at the edge of the Arctic Circle.
Visit the world-famous Golden Circle natural wonders, walk on the black sand beaches and see Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls along the south shore. Take a stroll in the majestic Vatnajokull National Park that includes Skaftafell, the Glacier Lagoon and the Diamond Beach. The magnificent Eastfjords area is home to the wild reindeer and a legendary sea monster. During this trip you will pass tiny villages tucked way in the fjords, you will encounter the most diverse wildlife in Iceland in nature reserves.

If you travel through Iceland always check the weather before you leave your hotel as it can change rapidly:  www.weather.is. For the road conditions, roads get easily damaged by frost and snow, have a look on www.road.is. Please bear in mind that even in summer roads can be blocked due to flooding of ice water.

Iceland offers you a great opportunity to see the Northern Lights. Best time is end of August to beginning of April. Thingvellir National Park is the perfect spot in Iceland to see the Aurora Borealis, better know as the Northern Lights. Next to this top location, other places to see the Northern Lights are Kirkjufell Mountain, Myvatn and Vík.
