Reykjavik
Reykjavik is Iceland‘s sprawling capital city. It is set in a bay dominated by the mighty Mount Esja, stands in stark contrast to the quiet fishing villages and tiny hamlets of this remarkable island nation. Reykjavik is extremely progressive, yet proudly traditional; extremely remote, yet surprisingly cosmopolitan; inextricably linked to its natural landscape, yet embracing of modern technology.
The tiny town centre is an eclectic mix of brightly painted houses, elegant shops, stylish bars and sophisticated museums. A variety of restaurants serve a delicious range of culinary delights, as well as an array of exotic treats such as pickled ram’s testicles and decomposing shark meat.
At the top of the list of things to do in Reykjavik is Hallgrimskirkja. Reykjavik’s church is the tallest church building in Iceland and was built between 1945 and 1986. This Reykjavik landmark is 74.5 metres high and is Reykjavik’s most famous landmark as it can be seen from all over the city. The church is open nearly every day. Tip: You can also climb the tower for a great view of downtown Reykjavik.
Whether you want to spend your holiday gallery-hopping while listening to Bjork on repeat, scuba diving between tectonic plates or relaxing in the myriad geothermal pools, Reykjavik is the ultimate destination for pleasure seekers and adventure junkies alike.
