Guimaraes

Located in northern Portugal’s Braga district, the city of Guimaraes was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 due to its profusion of exceptional medieval architecture and monuments.

It was Portugal’s first capital, the birthplace of the nation’s first king, and is referred to as the ‘birthplace of the Portuguese nationality’ or ‘the cradle city’.

Take a wander through the ancient streets of Guimaraes. Enjoy the throwback through the ages. The Gothic buildings in the city centre are superbly preserved. The imposing 11th-century Guimaraes Castle once defended the area from attacks by Norman and Moorish invaders. Don’t miss a trip up the Punha Mountain by cable car to enjoy some incredible views of the city. Guimaraes is also famous for its youthful atmosphere: half of its inhabitants are under the age of 30.
