Peneda-Gerês National Park

Peneda Gerês National Park is Portugal’s only national park. It is located in an area of exceptional natural beauty – a wonderland of rugged granite peaks and deep valleys, ethereal woodlands and cascading waterfalls. Formed some 400 million years ago and protected since the 1970s, this primordial landscape is a hub of biodiversity, with its varied ecosystems supporting a cornucopia of plant and animal life. Its botanical treasures include giant yew and holly trees, fragrant pine forests and leafy, centuries-old oaks, as well as ferns, sunshine yellow daffodils and deep purple irises. Resident wildlife includes roe deers, eagle owls, wild horses and endangered Iberian wolves – the park’s apex predator.
