Bilbao

You will find creativity at every turn in the capital of Basque country, in its exceptional architecture – both old and new, superb art museums, sublime cuisine and thriving local music scene. Arguably the piece de resistance of metropolitan Bilbao is the glittering Guggenheim Museum – a futuristic masterpiece of titanium-plated curves standing proudly above the Nervion River. The building’s construction in 1997 sparked a wave of urban transformation and the city today has an array of inspired modern edifices, as well as several historical gems, such as its Neoclassical theatre.

If you tire of exploring, take a break and indulge in some people-watching and ‘pintxos’ – delicious Basque tapas -at the Plaza Nueva, or head out to the emerald hills that encircle Bilbao to enjoy the scenery. On weekends we recommend you visit La Ribeira. It is a covered market, built in 1929. It is the largest in Europe, covering some 10,000 square metres. These unique halls are located in the heart of the old town, on the banks of the Bilbao ria. They offer great local food and music with a view onto the river.
