Joensuu

The vibrant capital of the North Karelia, and the second-largest city in Eastern Finland, Joensuu, is a student town filled with fascinating museums, enthralling national parks and an impressive array of things to do. Set at the outfall of the Pielisjoki River on the Saimaa lake system, and decorated by patches of thick woodland, Joensuu is prime outdoor sports territory as well as an excellent place to enjoy a taste of nature and city life in one stop.

Ski slopes, swimming spots and gorgeous trails are complemented by a whirlwind of cultural locations. Must-sees include the Carelicum Museum, Taitokortteli Art Centre and Joensuun Taidemuseo Gallery. Other highlights include excellent markets, regular classical music concerts and the massive annual Ilosaarirock Festival every July.
