Joensuu

Joensuu is the vibrant capital of North Karelia and the second largest city in Eastern Finland. It is also a student city full of fascinating museums, exciting national parks and an impressive range of activities. Situated at the mouth of the River Pielisjoki into the Saimaa lake system and surrounded by dense forests, Joensuu is a prime area for outdoor sports and an excellent place to experience both nature and city life in one go.

Ski slopes, swimming spots and beautiful hiking trails are complemented by a whirlwind of cultural attractions. Must-sees include the Carelicum Museum, the Taitokortteli Art Centre and the Joensuun Taidemuseo Gallery. Other highlights include excellent markets, regular classical music concerts and the huge annual Ilosaarirock festival in July.
