Kemi

The ‘Pearl of Finland’s north’, Kemi is the final frontier to the astonishing wilderness of the Arctic Circle. The town’s chief claim to fame is its snow castle LumiLinna, the largest in the world – at around 20 000 square metres and boasting towers over 20 metres high. It features a restaurant, theatre, gallery of ice sculptures, and more. Adventurous travellers should take the Sampo Icebreaker Cruise, which allows them to get out onto the ice and swim among blocks of the frozen sea (with protective suits on). In summer, stroll along the pretty promenade, or explore the surrounding rivers, lakes and waterfalls. The Jalokivigalleria, which houses a jaw-dropping collection of rare gems and jewellery from 60 different countries, is another truly impressive must-see.
