Ruka & Kuusamo

Located in east-central Finland, close to the Russian border, Ruka and Kuusamo are towns inextricably linked by their proximity and symbiosis. While Ruka is a popular ski resort town, offering spas, restaurants and countless activities, Kuusamo lies at the edge of a vast, wild fell, allowing explorers a wonderful escape into nature. Ruka boasts one of the largest beginners’ ski areas in the country and provides unique services and classes such as reindeer herding and dog sledging, as well as impressive cross-country routes, and indoor games centres. The Kuusamon Suurpetokeskus, a sanctuary for bears, lynx and foxes, is a must-see for animal-lovers, while the Hannun Luontokuvakeskus art gallery beckons to photography enthusiasts with its impressive collection of nature photography. Other highlights in the area include the stunning Oulanka National Park and the Kuusamo Nature Photo Festival (in September).
