Hamburg

Hamburg is a historic Hanseatic city located on the southern point of the Jutland Peninsula. This city is also known as Germany’s ‘gateway to the world’. Hamburg is the country’s biggest port and the second-busiest in Europe. It is located astride the River Elbe, some 100 km from the North Sea. Hamburg’s maritime spirit infuses the entire city; from architecture to menus to the cry of gulls, you always know you’re near the water.

In medieval times the Hanseatic League dominated commercial activity in northern Europe from the 13th to the 15th century. Hanse was a medieval German word for “guild,” or “association.
