Welcome in Berlin! Berlin is a city of culture, history and countless sights. The city was badly affected by the Second World War and was split into two by the Berlin Wall for years.  At the end of World War II (1945) the capital of Berlin ended up in four allied occupation zones. As a result of the postwar treaty talks tensions grew when France, Britain and the United States moved in  (1948) to create one an autonomous state, The Federal Republic of Germany.  The USSR created a blockade to avoid European interference. Britain and the United States started a massive airlift to supply the trapped inhabitants with food and fuel. In May 1949 the USSR ended the defeated blockade in Berlin. Three of the four occupation zones became Berlin-West, the fourth zone Berlin-East , was called Berlin Capital of the DDR (German Democratic Republic). Berlin-West ended up as an “island”, an enclave, in the middle of the communist regime. From August 13, 1961 to November 9, 1989, West Berlin was separated from East Berlin and the GDR by the Berlin Wall. The Wall had a number of border crossings, the most wellknown crossing is  Checkpoint Charlie. It was once the shared city’s most famous border crossing, between the American and Russian sectors. Although this museum is very popular (and packed with tourists), we recommend to visit the Tränenpalast (Palace of Tears) instead as it gives a way better and more realistic picture on how the city was divided and families were torn apart. Life behind the Iron Curtain, the political boundary dividing Europe into two separate areas, was very different from the West.  Visit the interactive DDR Museum to learn more about that. A bit further on you will find the most famous square of Berlin, Alexander Platz,  with the Berlin TV Tower. The interactive Wall Museum that opened in 2016 is fun for the whole family.

We suggest you buy a ticket for the “hop-on-hop-off sightseeing bus” that stops at all mayor tourist spots. Start at the Brandenburg Gate , next stop is the Museum Island with 6 museums: Pergamon Museum (Ishtar Gate painting), Pergamonmuseum (Das Panorama),  Bode-Museum (Byzantine Art), New Museum (Nefertiti), Old National Gallery(Caspar David Friedrich) and Altes Museum (Collection of Classical Antiquities). The new and very popular Pergamon museum offers Das Panorama, a 360° Panorama of the ancient metropolis, Pergamon. This attraction takes visitors into the year 129 BC. The next 3 stops are in Berlin Mitte / Alexanderplatz,  the oldest part of the city with the pedestrian-friendly Nikolai Quarter.  A great stop for lunch as this area is home to restaurants, cafés and artisan shops. After crossing the river Spree again you  can stop at Gendarmen Markt a huge square home to the Konzerthaus, the French and the German Cathedral and Communication Museum  and Ritter Sport Chocolate Exhibition . Via a stop at Check Point Charlie you arrive at the Berlin Wall Memorial and the museum Gropius Bau one of Europe’s most-important exhibition venues. The bus brings you via Potsdamer Platz to Kurfürstendamm.

Leave the city on Highway 1 and travel for one hour to Sanssouci Palace, the summer palace of Friedrich the Great. The palace was constructed in 1747 and represent the immense wealth of the Prussian Kings. On a hot day you can make a stop on the way back at Wannsee, a lake with a beach with sun-loungers and a recreation area. On the way back you can also visit Charlottenburg Palace. Friedrich III gave Sophie Charlotte of Hanover a large estate and the village of Lietze/Lützow, at that time still outside Berlin, and this was the site of her summer palace Charlottenburg. If you are a graffiti fan, a visit to the Teufelsberg (Devils Mountain) is recommended. Teufelsberg is was bugging station for the Americans during the Cold War. The Western Allies used the summit plateau to eavesdrop on the East. Today you can climb the abandoned tower and enjoy fantastic views of Berlin as well as the street art that is made by the squatters that live here. Sachsenhausen was a concentration camp in Nazi Germany during World War II. The camp was located 35 kilometers from Berlin in Oranienburg and was built by prisoners in 1936. it is time to bid farewell to Berlin and drive to the Northern part of Germany. This region is called Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, it is one of Germany’s 16 states. The coming six days you will visit all the highlights of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.  The state was established in 1945 after World War II. Your destination is Stralsund.  Stralsund is located on Strelasund, the water way in between the the mainland and the beautiful island Rügen. This city is well known for its Gothic architecture and packed with old churches and medieval buildings, like the Town Hall/Rathaus (13th century) and St Marien Kirche (13th century). Interesting sights are Museum of Cultural History and the moderen Oceanographic Museum (closed until 2023) and Ozeaneum Aquarium. Go on board the Gorch Fock, a marine sailboat built in 1933 that is docked in the harbour of Stralsund, next to the ferry to Rügen Island. Tomorrow you will drive over the massive bridge that connect the mainland with Rügen Island. Beer lovers can visit the 800 year old brewery Störtebeker that produces a wide variety of artisan beers using of raw ingredients, such as rye malt, wheat malt and barley malt, combined with a variety of hops types and different production processes.

Today you are going to visit the most beautiful island of Germany, Rügen. The Strelasund Crossing, a bridge of a total lengts of almost 3 kilometers, is a massive and spectacular construction. The longest span is 200 meters and the clearance for the ships passing the Strelasund is 42 meters! Rügen in the Baltic Sea is Germany’s largest island. It is a haven for outdoor enthousiast and people that long for nature and relaxation. Stunning beaches and dramatic chalk cliffs are waiting for you to discover. You can go horse riding, hike to Königsstuhl or in the medieval beech forest in Jasmund National Park. This park on the Jasmund Peninsule is on the UNESCO  World Heritage list.  After you have crossed the bridge, it is another 50 km, 45 minutes, to Jasmund Peninsula with its famous chalk cliffs. This is one of the five locations in Europe where chalk cliffs can be found. You can hike along the cliffs, but the best way to see these massive cliffs, is from sea. Being surrounded by the sea, Rügen island is a walhalla for seafood lovers. A whole day to discover this beautiful island lies ahead of you. TRANSPORT If you love to cycle get yourself an (e)bike at Pauli’s Radshop in Binz. If you love ancient trains, hop on the Rasender Roland, a steam locomotive that travels everyday from Putbus via Binz, Sellin and Baabe to Göhren and back, at a pace of 30km/h. Since 1895 this train historic train connects the coastal cities on the Eastern side of Rügen. Are you a vintage car lover? Each year, in the beginning of May, Rügen has its Ruegen Car Classic tournement that last for three days. You can even bring  your own olditmer and join! Enjoy industrial heritage and visit the oldtimer museum with cars and vintage (electric) trains next to the station of Prora. This 4000 square meter hall has also historic trains on display that date back to the late 1800’s. BEACH, Rügen Island is happy to receive 1800 hours of sun each year, that is an average of 5 hours per day. Since 1794 people from the bigger cities flock to Rügen in summer to enjoy the sun. Most of the resort buildings of these early days are still in good shape i.e. the Seebrücke in Sellin, this pavillion  build on a bridge is the prefect spot to enjoy the most beautiful sunsets of the island. If you love a stunning ambiance try “Lothar’s favorite dish” in Binz Strand Halle. ARCHITECTURE The famous architect Ulrich Müther  was born in Binz, Rügen (1934 – 2007). He definitely left his mark on architecture as he was a magician  if it comes to concrete. His Müther Turm that looks like a giant UFO in the dunes of Binz is a popular wedding location. Another masterpiece on the island of this DDR architect Ulrich Müther,  is the “Kurmuschel”, wellness mussel in Sassnitz town. The village of Prora hosts the most ugly concrete building you have ever seen. Actually with its 4,5 kilometers length, it is the longest building in the world. During the DDR (German Democratic Republic) the East-German government was in control of everything. Adolf Hitler commissioned his engineers in 1936 to build the largest spa in the world, along the sandy beach on the German island of Rügen. The Nazis called it Prora. The immense Prora was supposed to provide 20.000 people a holiday accommodation. As the Third Reich embarks on its devastating journey across Europe, it is calling back workers to fight at the front or serve in the factories. Prora comes to a standstill. Nowadays the building is again under construction, when it’s finished in 2022, it will offer very luxury holiday homes. Visit the Dokumentationszentrum in Prora. Ascend the Treetop tower in Prora for a magnificent 360 ° view over the island. Visit the hunting castle Granitz (1850), south of Binz, enjoy panoramic view of the island from the top of the tower. Schloss Spyker stamt uit de “Zweedse tijd”, het werd gebouwd tussen 1570 en 1595. Another castle in the North of the island is Spyker Castle it dates back to the “Swedish era”, it was built between 1570 and 1595. Spyker Castle is a romantic place to sleep, it is a hotel nowadays.

Your destination for today is Rostock. Rostock was the largest coastal and most important port city in East Germany. During WWII this city was devastated and was later thrashed by de planners of the DDR. Today the city boasts many attractions like historic buildings, a pretty beach in Warnemunde and one of the oldest universities in the world. Rostock is situated on the bank of the river and extends for a length of 16 km. On the seaside it is called Warnemünde. The pastel-colored buildings in this city have bell gables, just like Amsterdam. One of the most picturesque places in Rostock is the New Market Square (Neu Markt) with its gothic Town Hall. Originally built in the 13th century  and in the 18th century a Baroque façade and a banqueting hall were added. Climb the spiral staircase of the 45 meter high tower of the Petrikirche for a spectacular view over the city or visit the famous Rostock Zoo.  Board the marine vessel Dresden and experience the history of this seafaring and shipbuilding nation. This Rostock Maritime Museum has some 12.000 exhibits on display. The vessel is docked next to the park, not far from the bridge. On your way to the museum you pass the Rostocker Kaffeerösterei. Watch how they roast fresh coffee, the master roasters know how to lure out the specific ideal taste of the individual varieties. Four more museums in unique buildings can be found in Rostock: the Societät Maritim, the Kulturhistorisches Museum, the Schaudepot am Schwanenteich, the Rostock shipping museum and the local history museum. The Rostock Heath, a large urban forest, measures around 6,000 hectares and lies directly on the Baltic Sea coast.  from Markgrafenheide to Graal-Müritz. Rostock Heath is an unique recreational area for hiking and cycling. Back in the old days the wood was used for ships and houses and it was also a popular hunting area. Every second weekend in August the shoreline of Warnemünde is dotted with 200 tall ships. If you plan your visit in August, you will definitely enjoy the annual Rostock Hanse Sail with antique vessels and tall ships on display.

Another harbour city of great importance during The Hanseatic League is Wismar. Wismar is very well preserved  and an unique phenomenon of German history. The co-operation and mergers of merchants for the promotion of their trade abroad gave rise to a town covenant, During your stay you will notice that this city has a diverse cultural atmosphere.  Wismar has been under rule of various German states as well as the Swedish Empire. Top attractions to see in Wismar include the 16th century Dutch well and art installation called Wasserkunst, the 14th century brick church called St. Nikolai, the large central plaza called Am Markt and the 18th century Baumhaus made from massive tree trunks and decorated with Swedish heads called Schwedenköpfe. Wismar is also a popular place for harbor cruises, which can be very scenic and romantic around sunset. Alter Schwede (the old Swedish) was the town house and the oldest house in the city of Wismar. The house was built in 1380 and has a very unique late Gothic facade , today the building is home to a restaurant. Archidiakonat , home of the deacons, is another fascinating building located at the Marienplatz. A splendid example of North German brick Gothic is the former residence and administrative building of the archdeacon, deputy of the bishop in the church of the Middle Ages. Of particular significance is the richly articulated stepped gable decorated with wind holes on the north side of the building, which was erected around 1407/1408. Along with the Marienkirchturm, the lavishly renovated  Archdeaconry is today the last medieval building on Marienkirchplatz. A perfect outing for the family is Wonnemar, a true water paradise for the whole family.

Today your destination is the capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Schwerin. This city with the epic castle, lovely nature and small city charm is definitely worth a vist. The enchanting Schwerin Castle is towering high above the city. For centuries the castle was the home of the dukes and grand dukes of Mecklenburg. Today the state parliament parlement resides here. Schloss Schwerin will fascinate every visitor like a fairy tale. Explore this famed Neo-Renaissance German chateau which is located on an island in the lake Schweringer See. The palace boasts elaborately designed rooms and lush gardens. Cross the bridge and take a right into Werderstrasse for a visit of the State Museum. This Staatliches Museum Schwerin boasts an impressive collection of paintings, including works from the 15th century to the present. The centrepiece of the collections is Flemish and Dutch art of the 17th century. The dukes acquired works of art by now world-famous masters and thus laid the foundation for the collection. Precious works by Jan Brueghel the Elder, Paulus Potter, Adriaen van Ostade, Frans van Mieris the Elder or Frans Hals. Frans Hals, Peter Paul Rubens, Jacob Jordaens or Carel Fabritius provide a differentiated insight into the art of the time and testify to the museum’s international standing. Germany is famous for its “Kaffee und Kuchen”, coffee and pastries, they call the shop a “Konditorei”. Walk via Kleine Moor to the Puschkinstrasse 14 to Konditorei Rothe (400 meter). This coffee shop opened its doors back in 1952. It has the best mouth watering variety of German cakes and pastries in Schwerin.  If you enjoyed too many cakes, you can climb the 220 steps of the nearby Schwerin Cathedral during opening hours.  The view of the city, the lakes, the castle and the surrounding countryside is magnificent and well worth climbing. If you are not a culture vulture we recommend to discover Schwerin by rickshaw. The rickshaw gently swings over the old pavement of the state capital. The castle shines majestically in its new splendour. Passing Demmler’s government buildings between ducking half-timbered houses, you breathe in the history of this city. Discover the lake district of Schwerin by bicycle. You only really get to know the diversity and beauty of Schwerin’s lake landscape off the beaten track. Or by boat, from the island a tour boat departs frequently for a cruise over the lake of 1,5 hours. The same operator also rents out pedal boats. The Open Air Museum Mueß is great for families with younger kids. Old farmhouses, flowering orchards, ancient houses and even an old village school: the open-air museum is a window into the past and the reality of life for people in the 19th century. The museum spreads out over 3.5 ha and is located on the Southern shores of the Schwerin Lake. On the extensive grounds of the open-air museum, various markets, events with traditional music, theatre performances, seminars and children’s festivals take place during the season.

Now you are ready to hit the road for your next historic Hanseatic city, Lübeck. Lübeck is the second largest city of the Schleswig-Holstein  province. It lies on the mouth of the River Trave, which flows into the Bay of Lübeck in the borough of Travemünde. In the Middle Ages, the city was known as the “Queen of the Hanseatic League” for a reason. Lübeck was not only the cradle of the Hanseatic League, but was also its centre for a long time. The whole of the Altstadt is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Here you will find houses with beautiful facades and a handful of monumental churches, including the Jakobikirche, the church of the sailors. Dutch architectural influences can be seen in many buildings. Lübeck was founded in 1143 and after the castle was built. It was the first German harbour town on the Baltic Sea. In 1229, a monastery was built to replace the castle in the form of a Dominican monastery in honour of its patron saint Maria Magdalena. The Castle Gate is Lübeck’s oldest city gate, together with the Holsten Gate. Both gates survived the test of time, these gates still form the entrance to the “Alt Stadt”, Old Town. Above the gate is written the motto “Concordia Domi Foris Pax” meaning:  Harmony within, peace outside. Today the impressing Holstentor (gate) is a museum. Discover the exhibits such as historical ship models, suits of armor, weapons, legal instruments, and articles of merchandise offer many exciting discoveries to the visitors. High quality coffee, for the early birds, and crazy cocktails for the afternoon are served next to the gate in Dietrich’s Lübeck novel café/bistro/bar. From here it is only a 600 meter stroll to the Harbour Museum. When you cross the bridge you can have lunch in the harbour with the view on the Altstadt in The Newport Restaurant.  It is not only history that Lübeck has on offer, visit the Buddenbrookhaus and continue through the Altstadt to the famous Marzipan Museum. Cross the Breitestrasse to the Market Place. This is the spot where magic happens during Christmas time. Starting end of November, 400 merchants offer all kinds of handmade toys and Christmas decorations. People come from far and wide to see the Lübeck’s Fairy Tale Forest with its 500 illuminated trees and 21 stalls, representing the tales of the Brothers Grimm.  Travemünde is the seaside part of Lübeck. From the “Altstadt” river Trave meanders for 20 km until it reaches the coast at Travemuende. In summer this a great place to hang out on the beach or stroll over the seaside promenade. From the Marina Travemunde restaurant on the banks of the Trave, you see the all sort of ships passing by.  Fancy a walk along the sea? At the end of the seaside promenade starts the Brodtener Steilufer (steep bank). This steep shore stretches out over four kilometres. It is wonderful walk over the beach, along the cliffs that can rise as high as 20 meters above sea level. You are treated with fantastic panoramic view of the Bay of Lübeck and the small and large ships that sail on the Baltic Sea. If you want to enjoy the great view of the sea alone, then visit the Brodten shore early in the morning and make yourself comfortable on a bench on the cliff edge with a cup of morning coffee!

Why not discover the beautiful area of Holsteinischen Schweiz, Holstein Switzerland? This name raises the question why is it called like this? On 20 May 1885, Johannes Janus opened a hotel called Hotel Holsteinische Schweiz in Malente on the banks of the Kellersee, which became very popular. The name was then extended to the nearby railway station and finally to the whole region. The charm of this region is explained by the varied landscape. Rolling hills, forests, lakes, green meadow landscapes and the sandy beaches of the Baltic Sea is, a great outdoor paradise for nature lovers. Discover the many picturesque towns and villages in this area like Eutin, Malente and Plön. Leave Lübeck on the Autobahn nr 1, at Haffkrug take the turn off to Eutin and stop at the Eutin Castle. Continue to Plön, rent a kano in Plön and paddle through this village and over the nearby Plön Lake (kano map under documents on your smartphone).  Or hike the island Prinzeninsel, a 6,5 kilometer family-friendly hike with many stops worth seeing.  In this area you will find a typical German farmhouse, apple orchard, a castle, castle gardens and you can go for a swim at the Prinzeninsel bathing area. Next stop is Malente, from here it is another 5,5 km to the North to Ingenhof. In season you can go strawberry and raspberry picking on the farm. Wine lovers can enjoy a wine tasting and a walk over through the 8 hectares of vineyards. Travel back to Lübeck for the night.
