Wine, dolphins and flamingos! The Wine Route of the Setúbal Peninsula lies south of the Tagus river and adjacent the mountain range Serra da Arrábida. You can hike in Parque Natural park and the Reserva Natural do Estuário do Sado nature reserve, where you can spot dolphins! From Setúbal you can book a dophin tour or flamingo (season October – March) boat tour. The beautiful small beaches of Sesimbra or Portinho da Arrábida north of the Sado River contrast with the long sandy beaches of the Península de Troia peninsula on the southern shore. Go where the locals go! Have you ever wondered what the Atlantic Coast of Portugal looks like?  In the south-west of Portugal you will find the most beautiful beaches of the Iberian Peninsula. Since the travel time is only 2 hours to your next destination, we recommend a stop in Melides. This town won the Reader’s Choice Award 2021 of the  magazine Condé Nast Traveller.  Melides is home to a thriving creative community. There are several beautiful walking routes along the rugged coast of Costa Vicentina. The 11-day route is called the Historical Way, has a length of 229 km and runs from Santiago de Cacém to Cabo de São Vicente. The shorter Fisherman’s Trail of 4 days runs from Porto Covo to the picturesque town of Odeceixe. Enjoy the beaches and go to sleep early so that you can make a beautiful hike of 22 kms (7 hours) in the early morning! EXPERT TIPS FOR COSTA VICENTINA LUNCH in Melides: We recommend the beach café Costa Nossa, with a view onto the Atlantic Ocean. HIKING the Costa Vicentina Hikers might want to add an extra night here so they can enjoy the 22 km long coastal hike from Almograve to Zambujera that will take you about 7 hours. The best time to hike this route is September to June. This hike is the most beautiful leg of the Fisherman’s Trail. The route is well signposted and runs largely along the coast. Initially you follow a wide gravel road along the coast, which takes you to the spectacular little harbour of Almograve. The cliffs here become increasingly higher and the views more dramatic. The Fishermen’s Path now turns inland and you walk through a pine forest before reaching the village of Cavaliero. After this, you will soon come back to the coast and the lighthouse of Cape Sardao. You continue walking along the edge of the hundred metre high cliffs to the south. In spring, storks nest on the tops of the cliffs that rise tens of metres straight from the ocean. You pass a number of small beaches located in the depths of the sea before descending to the small harbour of Zambujera. Drive along the coastal road to the South, you can stop for coffee on the lovely square of Carrapateira.  you will reach Sagres on Cabo São Vicente, the most Western tip of the European continent. In the ancient world, it was the last explored point. For this reason the Romans called Sagres “the Promontorium Sacrum”, the end of the world. Sagres is known for its dramatic cliffs towering above the shore of the Atlantic Ocean. You can visit the Fortaleza de Sagres, a fortress that was half destroyed during the earthquake and tsunami of 1755.  This fort protected the citizens of Sagres against robbers from North Africa. It was built in the 15th century Infante D. Henrique or Prince Henry the Navigator. From this fort, he planned his expeditions to the unknown seas on the western side of the African continent. On the spot where the lighthouse now stands, stood the house of Hendrik the Navigator, who died here in 1460. In the fort you find a “Rosa dos Ventos”, a wind compass.  This circle of over 40 meter in diameter shows 40 segments, a flag in the center showed the direction of the wind. Do not forget to visit the Camera Sonora – Voz do Mar. This sound camera lets you feel and hear the power of the sea. The shape of the building, a kind of snail shell, amplifies the sound. You have to walk to the centre of the circle. Here is a metal grid and below it the sea is pounding against the rocks. Sit down on the bench and enjoy the power and noise of Mother Nature. Today you will drive to Beja. This tranquil town is embedded in the fertile Alentejo farmland and commanded by a marble castle tower. Beja has existed in some form since the Celts, and in Roman times it was called Pax Julia after the treaty that brought western Iberia under the imperial yoke. It used to be a small historic town that was under the  Julius Ceasar regime in Roman times. It is not only Roman architecture that you will find in Beja, the Moorish left their footprint too. Have a look at the houses in the old town when you walk over the  cobbled streets. Visit the Medieval Castle from 13th century. During the battles it was an important fortress that helped to defend Portugal’s borders. Your destination of today is the Moorish village Moura, named after the Moorish Princess Moura Saluqia. The legend says the story of Saluquia that threw herself from one of the towers of the castle, after she discovered that her lover was killed. Visit the Castle of Moura on your own and explore further the history of this heartbroken story. Further on Convento das Dominicanas, Convento do Carmo and Azeite de Moura (olive oil museum) are worthy site to visit in the city centre, and relaxing cup of coffee in the heart of the city, is an excellent meeting point, with coffee shops, sidewalk cafés and many local shops. Visit  the Mouraria, a typical Arab district and admire the old castle walls in the street Muralha Nova.  If you like to know more about the history of this town and its Muslim past, you can visit the Municipal Museum. The museum is difficult to find as it has been moved (since 2019) to the old Matadouro (slaughter house) of Moura. Drive up to the picturesque little historical town of Monsaraz to check out the medieval castle and enjoy the jaw dropping view. You will not find cars in Monsaraz, stroll the narrow cobbled streets with the whitewashed houses. Bring a sweater as Monsaraz is 350 meters above sea level, so also a perfect visit for the hotter days. Small shops sell the typical local products. In the immediate vicinity of Monsaraz there are some spectacular megaliths, such as the menhir of Outeiro, which is almost 6 metres high. In Telheiro, about 4 kilometres from Monsaraz you will find the the Cromlech of Xerez, a menhir that was moved to this place when the Alqueva lake was filling up after the dam was built. If you love to be on the water, we advise you to rent a house boat and cruise Alqueva Lake. This lake is the biggest man-made lake of Europe. The dam was finished in 2002 its reservoir reached the full level, for the first time, in 2010. You can overnight on a boat, they are suitable for 2 to 12 persons. You can also make a river cruise on a bigger boat.
